What Douglas and Saleh were REALLY saying in 3/3 Presser

For the first time in a long time, we have a GM who’s competency goes beyond just understanding how to properly build a team & being an excellent talent evaluator. He also runs an incredibly tight ship, which is an underrated aspect of his abilities. So many Jets ships were leaking from their hulls. Finally, one that’s properly plugged up. Also, he very specifically and deliberately chooses the words he uses. He’s very careful not to tip his hand in one direction or another. Because of that, yesterday I witnessed many fans, even analysts, misinterpret what Douglas was saying, and I felt obligated to set it right. I spend hours last night combing through the entire presser and tweeting just about every question they answered and my take on it.

Many felt he said he is sticking with Sam, or won’t spend in FA of guys that are elite & deserving, as well won’t trade for Watson. None of this is true. Below are all my tweets of the individual clips of just about every question he answered as well all my takes on what he actually meant. I hope it clarifies.

So in my opinion, Douglas repeated the same response when it came to Sam, never saying he is our guy or he isn’t available. Also spoke a LOT about Pro Days & how his staff plans to eval & address them. This sounds to me more he is looking to move on from Sam. Also he did say we build through the draft & supplement in FA which is 100% correct and the way to do it, but did say he would spend money if “opportunity and value meet” and if it’s a guy deserving as well fills a need. That means guys like Joe Thuney are still a possibility. Also his trading draft picks statement was brilliant! He said great consistent teams build through the draft, which is true, but also said they have lot of different options to explore and it’s important to HIT on your picks. Didn’t say at all he wouldn’t send any away, and based on statement before of “opportunity meeting value” he won’t send the farm but the 3 or 4 1sts I believe Watson would cost us as our 2nd is way more valuable than anyone else’s picks, I believe that could be in play. If anything, trading away top picks makes it more important than ever to hit on your remaining picks, which is another way what he said could be interpreted.
