Jets Receiving Options for Sunday

If you read todays earlier article, you know the offensive line was finally not the problem last Sunday. It was everybody else, but mainly Darnold’s receivers. His line gave him decently clean pockets with time to throw. However, his receivers were just unable to get open, regardless of how much time they had to do so. The Bills have a top 5 secondary in the NFL, which Adam Gase used as an excuse Monday, but you cannot make excuses. The Jets have a very difficult and completely unearned schedule this season. Seriously MAJOR head scratcher! Based on their strength of schedule, I would have guessed they won at least 9 games last season. But anyway, the Jets are playing good teams with good secondaries all season. Is Gase preparing us for more of week 1?

That being said, there was just one receiving bright spot for the Jets on Sunday, and that was Jamison Crowder. Last season if Darnold didn’t miss time Crowder would have topped 1,000 yards for the first time in his career, and this season he looked to be on that track plus setting career highs in receptions. But alas and with our luck, he also hurt his hamstring and is out this Sunday for the 49ers.

Against the Bills the Jets new WR1 Breshad Perriman looked like he did his first 3 seasons, like a complete bust. He failed to get open, and when he did it was cheap dunk passes for nothing yards. Chris Hogan, who I thought was nicknamed 7/11, also had trouble getting open. He caught 1 of his 4 passes for ZERO yards. The Jets need these two guys to step up and in a big way Sunday against the 49ers if they are going to even have a semblance of a chance.

One of the most exciting stories coming out of Jets training camp was how absolutely ripped Braxton Berrios got.

With Crowder out, he will serve as the primary slot receiver. Berrios has always looked fast and agile, but with his new strength the Jets are hoping for a breakout season from him. He has the most upside of all Jets receivers this coming Sunday.

These are literally the only 3 wide receivers the Jets have currently on their active roster. Expect them to elevate one or two from the practice squad. Josh Malone is the most likely candidate as he suited up and played Sunday against the Bills, but if healthy there is fan favorite Lawrence Cager.

Cager got the fans attention at Jets training camp by making big plays and what would be crucial catches in a real game. They also like his measurable, 6’5″ 220 lbs.

One thing is for sure though, whoever the Jets receivers are on Sunday they HAVE to help Sam Darnold out.
